A court has found a top South Korean Buddhist monk, the former abbot of Beopjusa Temple, guilty of habitual gambling in overseas casinos.

A South Korean court has ruled against a prominent Buddhist monk, the ex-abbot of Beopjusa Temple, for repeatedly gambling at foreign casinos. The Cheongju District Court handed down a 10-month prison sentence to the monk, who is in his 60s and remains unnamed in local media. However, a judicial panel decided to suspend the sentence, placing him on probation instead.

The monk was discovered to have made 47 trips to Macao for gambling purposes, leading to the legal action against him. Despite the guilty verdict, he will not serve time in jail due to the probation decision by the court.
