North Carolina Considers Tax Hike for Sports Betting Operators

North Carolina lawmakers are considering an increase in the state's sports betting tax rate as part of ongoing budget negotiations, following stronger-than-expected revenue collections since online wagering launched in March 2024.

North Carolina lawmakers are considering an increase in the state's sports betting tax rate as part of ongoing budget negotiations, following stronger-than-expected revenue collections since online wagering launched in March 2024.

Currently, the state taxes gross wagering revenue at 18% across eight licensed sports betting operators. The market has seen significant growth since legalization, with revenue exceeding $287 million. The proposed tax hike aims to capitalize on this success and boost state revenue further.
